Kentucky Lands Transfer Sawyer Smith

Mark Stoops and the Wildcats picked up the major remaining piece to the 2019 season on Monday. Needing a quarterback to back up Terry Wilson the Cats got their man as Kentucky lands transfer Sawyer Smith.

Help At a Position of Need for the Cats

Back on April 27th Gunnar Hoak announced he was leaving Lexington to continue his football career at Ohio State.

Hoak’s departure leaves the Cats with no experience behind Wilson. Kentucky has redshirt sophomore Walker Wood, however, due to injuries he has never played in a college game.

Behind Wood, Kentucky has two incoming freshmen Amani Gilmore and Nik Scalzo. It’s hard to imagine offensive coordinator Eddie Gran wanting to throw either into the buzzsaw of the SEC. In addition, Scalzo is coming off an ACL injury.

Last week former Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens visited Stoops and the Wildcats. However, it seems likely he ends up reuniting with former offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State.

On Monday via twitter Smith announced he was heading to Lexington and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Smith completed nearly 63 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions last season at Troy. This after he was inserted into the starting role following an injury to Kaleb Barker. In addition, he added another 191 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Smith threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-32 win over Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl. Not only was the bowl game his last at Troy, but also turned out to be the last for Coach Neal Brown. On January 5th Brown left to take the job at West Virginia replacing Dana Holgorsen.

Once again Stoops gets a huge pickup on Monday as Kentucky lands Smith. The Cats get exactly what they need for the upcoming season, a player with experience to back up Wilson. Stay with Last Word On College Football for more updates on the Wildcats as we get you ready for the 2019 season.
